Spelling City

To improve our ability to spell, we need to understand the four ways words are built, their phonological, visual, etymological and morphological roots. Also, play with words and take the practice tests.

Everyone's Kung Fu...learning

Picture
Ayaaa! Pow! Zen Martial Arts has started with the powerful and close-quarter oriented style of Wing Chun (eternal springtime, 永春). It's claim to fame was one of the most famous students of the great Wing Chun master, Yip Man. He taught the one and only Bruce Lee.

Task: Write a word for each move into your homework book or website. Alternatively, you can buddy up and record your movements to show the class.

Divide and Conquer

Differentiated Learning, a little closer...

Picture
Each student is different, has unique strengths, personal preferences in how they learn and learn at varying rates. One great way to help the varying paces of learning for each student, while making content and projects more engaging and personal is for teachers to create their own multimedia books. Creating your own multimedia book allows you to pool resources that you prefer, fields of knowledge that you believe could be more pertinent and in methods that are more engaging.

Want to make your own? Own an Apple computer? Easy. Grab iBooks Author off the App Store, which is for free, and use one of the templates (really, who has the time?) and start placing in your content.

How do you distribute? Easy, got a website? Yes, just place it there and give them the link. Don't have a website? No problem, just email it to the students...well, that won't work in our DEC environment. That's one of the reasons why I have my own website.

iBooks is a great way to flip the classroom. Inspired by many educators leading the way, the following iBooks are just some of the units in our class.

Want to do one better? Why not get the students to write their own textbooks for their own learning. Or co-write one with them. I'll see how this project goes.
