Great writers stretch out noun groups to build characters.
He could have just wrote
Abel Jackson became a marine biologist. He travelled and studied. In time he became an expert. Inside he still felt like a boy with a snorkel.
But he didn't! 5/6M picked up some of his skills and below is their first draft.
